DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
CLEP Chemistry FAQs
What is the Chemistry CLEP?
The Chemistry CLEP test assesses your knowledge of content typically covered throughout a one-year general chemistry class.
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is designed to give people the chance to earn college credit for knowledge they have already acquired. The Chemistry CLEP exam assesses your knowledge of content that would typically be covered throughout a one-year general chemistry class at a college level. By taking and passing the CLEP Chemistry exam, you can earn up to 3 college credits and skip the college course, saving you quite a bit of time and money.
What’s on the Chemistry CLEP?
The Chemistry CLEP test is intended to encompass the content typically covered over the course of a one-year general chemistry class in a college setting. This includes the following broad topics:
Structure of Matter - Atomic theory and atomic structure and chemical bonding
States of Matter - Gases, liquids and solids, and solutions
Reaction Types - Acid-base reactions; concepts of Arrhenius, Brønsted-Lowry, and Lewis; amphoterism; reactions involving coordination complexes; precipitation reactions; and oxidation-reduction reactions
Equations and Stoichiometry - Ionic and molecular species present in chemical systems; net-ionic equations; Stoichiometry: mass and volume relations with emphasis on the mole concept; balancing of equations
Equilibrium - Concept of dynamic equilibrium of physical and chemical; quantitative treatment
Kinetics -Concepts of rate reaction; activation energy and the role of catalysts; the relationship between the rate-determining step and reaction mechanism
Thermodynamics - State functions for first and second law; relationship of change in free energy to equilibrium constants and electrode potentials
Descriptive Chemistry - Overall facts, principles, and concepts of chemistry
Experimental Chemistry - Laboratory experiments in general chemistry about the equipment used, observations made, calculations performed, and interpretation of the results
Who takes the Chemistry CLEP?
Anyone with prior knowledge of a CLEP subject can take a CLEP exam. Typical CLEP test-takers include high school students, military service members, and non-traditional college students who want to quickly earn college credit at a fraction of the price.
If you have previous knowledge in Chemistry and want to skip a college course while still earning college credit, taking the CLEP Chemistry test is an excellent idea! If you prepare prior to taking the CLEP Chemistry exam and pass, you could save hundreds of dollars on college tuition and bypass taking the course in college.
How is the Chemistry CLEP scored?
You’ll receive two CLEP exam scores for the Chemistry CLEP: a raw CLEP score and a scaled CLEP score. Scaled CLEP scores range from 20 to 80. Your raw CLEP score is calculated based on how many answers you get right – you’ll receive 1 point for each question answered correctly, which will make your scaled CLEP score. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so guessing is encouraged. Multiple choice exams are scored by a computer. The scaled score will be the score that appears on your CLEP Chemistry exam.
How hard is the Chemistry CLEP exam?
The Chemistry CLEP exam is often regarded as one of the most difficult CLEP exams, with a CLEP Chemistry pass rate of 39 percent. With that being said, it will be critical that you prepare for the Chemistry CLEP exam for a couple of months leading up to test day. By creating a CLEP Chemistry study plan and by setting aside plenty of time to prepare for the CLEP Chemistry exam, you’ll have a greater advantage in achieving your best possible score for the CLEP Chemistry test so you can earn college credit and bypass the first-level Chemistry college course.
Is the Chemistry CLEP multiple-choice?
The CLEP Chemistry Exam consists of approximately 75 multiple-choice questions which you will be given 90 minutes to complete. These questions assess a student’s knowledge of topics covered in a typical general chemistry college course such as organic chemistry, electron energy levels, structure and states of matter, free energy of formation and reaction, and atomic masses, for instance.
Structure of Matter - 20%
States of Matter - 19%
Reaction Types - 12%
Equations and Stoichiometry - 10%
Equilibrium - 7%
Kinetics - 4%
Thermodynamics - 5%
Descriptive Chemistry - 14%
Experimental Chemistry - 9%
Should I prep for the Chemistry CLEP? And how much?
CLEP exams test you on the equivalent of an entire college semester’s worth of curriculum in approximately 90 minutes. While the idea is to test you on material you are very familiar with, some practice on the content and the test itself will benefit you greatly as a satisfactory score earns you the college credit you’re after, saving you time in the classroom and money in your pocket.
While everyone is different, Peterson’s recommends at least 6 weeks of Chemistry CLEP test prep to cover all of the material and concepts covered on the CLEP Chemistry exam.
