What is the College Composition CLEP?
The College Composition CLEP measures students’ skills in analysis, argumentation, synthesis, usage, ability to recognize logical development, and research. By taking the College Composition CLEP test, potential students can earn college credit by demonstrating their mastery of composition, saving both time and money in their quest for a college education. The test questions on the CLEP College Composition exam evaluate the below in the approximate percentages indicated:
Conventions of Standard Written English—10%
Revision Skills—40%
Ability to Source Materials—25%
Rhetoric Analysis—25%
Some questions may require more than one of the abilities. In addition to the multiple-choice section, the College Composition exam includes a mandatory essay section that tests skills in crafting arguments from examination and paraphrasing information of multiple sources. This section consists of two essays, measuring a candidate’s ability to write clearly and effectively through the test taker’s reading, observation, experience, and citations.
What’s on the College Composition CLEP?
The College Composition CLEP Composition will have questions encompassing various areas of literature and composition. Some of the topics on the exam include conventions of standard written English, revision skills, source materials, point of view, passive voice, and rhetorical analysis. In addition to the 55-minute, multiple-choice questions in the exam, the College Composition exam includes a mandatory essay section. There will be two essays during this section of the CLEP exam. The first essay is based on the test taker’s reading and observation. The second essay requires test takers to synthesize and cite two provided sources. Test takers will have 30 minutes to write the first essay. There will be 40 minutes to read the two sources and write the second essay, for a total time of 70 minutes for this section of the exam.
Who takes the College Composition CLEP?
CLEP exams provide a valuable opportunity to a wide variety of people seeking to save money while earning college credit. Tests assess students’ knowledge of various academic subjects. Learners that benefit from CLEP include:

How is the College Composition CLEP scored?
The CLEP College Composition exam uses a scaled score, based on multiple-choice questions and essay scores, which range from 20 to 80. The student then earns an A, B, C, or D based on this score. For the essay portion of this exam, scores are as follows:
6—High level of competence
5—Good level of competence
4—Satisfactory level of competence
3—Limited level of competence
2—Exhibits little competence
1—Insufficient support
0—Off-topic
Letter grades are then applied to your college course equivalent. Students should find resources to support them in their test preparation in order to perform well and demonstrate a high level of competence.
Does College Composition CLEP have an essay?
The CLEP College Composition exam includes a required essay section consisting of two essays. Both essays examine a test taker’s skills of argumentation, analysis, and synthesis and measure their ability to write clearly and effectively. You will have 30 minutes to compose the first essay—based on reading and observation. The second essay grants 40 minutes to review two sources and write the second essay. In this essay, the test taker will synthesize and cite two provided sources. Should I prep for the College Composition CLEP? And how much?
The College Composition CLEP evaluates you on the equivalent of an entire college semester’s worth of curriculum in approximately 125 minutes.
