What is the Humanities CLEP exam?
The Humanities CLEP exam tests your knowledge of all periods from classical to contemporary in poetry, prose, philosophy, art, architecture, music, dance, theater, and film. The College Level Examination Program, or the CLEP, is a collection of standardized tests that measure your knowledge of certain subjects. Students can earn college credit at thousands of colleges and universities by scoring satisfactorily on a computer-based CLEP exam.
What’s on the Humanities CLEP?
This Humanities CLEP exam assesses test takers’ general knowledge of literature, visual arts, and performing arts, including music. Specific topics include film, dance, poetry, prose, painting, and sculpture. The exam covers topics across multiple periods from the Classical period through the 20th century.
The Humanities CLEP exam contains 140 questions covering the following topics:
Literature (50%)
10% Drama
10%–15% Poetry
15%–20% Fiction
10% Nonfiction (including philosophy)
The Arts (50%)
20% Visual Arts: Painting, Sculpture, etc.
5% Visual Arts: Architecture
15% Performing Arts: Music
10% Performing Arts: Film, Dance, etc.

Who takes the Humanities CLEP?
Students who want to gain college credit in literature without taking a class can take the Humanities CLEP exam. Anyone seeking college credit can take CLEP exams. Homeschoolers, military personnel, and adult learners are typical CLEP test takers, but exams are also open to college and high school students. CLEP exams are helpful for students seeking higher education outside of the traditional classroom.

Should I prep for the Humanities CLEP? And how much?
CLEP exams test you on the equivalent of an entire college semester’s worth of curriculum in approximately 90 minutes. While the idea is to test you on material you are very familiar with, some practice on the content and the test itself is in order as a satisfactory score earns you the college credit you’re after. While everyone is different, Peterson’s recommends at least 6 weeks of Humanities CLEP test prep for test day.

The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends that colleges and universities award three semester hours of credit for a score of 50 or higher on the exam. However, individual schools establish their own policies regarding credit awards.
