- Kallie
Concise and helpful lesson slides. Liked that it was very interactive. More "fun" than using a book for test prep. Like having immediate feedback vs the "class". Good explanations for wrong answers.
- Jack
The platform's user-friendly interface and accurate practice exams provided a well-rounded and efficient study experience. The real-time feedback and detailed explanations enhanced my understanding. I highly recommend Petersons!!!

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
Top HSPT FAQs
What is the HSPT test?
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a nationally-recognized private high school admissions exam that is also used for scholarship selection and curriculum placement.
What's on the HSPT test?
The HSPT test is a multiple-choice exam with 4 distinct sections and 1 optional science section:
Reading – 62 questions
Language skills – 74 questions
Mathematics – 64 questions
Cognitive Skills – 112 question
Science Test (optional) – Question topics include: biological sciences, earth sciences, physical sciences, implications of scientific technology, and principles of scientific research and experimentation
The full exam is over 300 questions and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete.
Who takes the HSPT test?
The HSPT test is an entrance examination for eighth-grade students who want to attend a Catholic or private high school beginning in ninth grade.
Is the HSPT test hard?
The TACHS exam scores involve a percentile rank between 1 (low) and 99 (high) where 50 is the average. Students will receive an NPR (National Percentile Rank) and LPR (Local Percentile Rank) for Reading, Written Expression, Mathematics, Total Achievement Score (this is a weighted average of Reading, Written Expression, and Math), and Ability Score. A student’s TACHS score is an important factor in the admissions process for Catholic high schools. Schools use TACHS scores to gauge a student’s academic abilities and potential. TACHS scores may also determine academic placement within the school and whether students are eligible for scholarships or other academic programs.
Why take the HSPT test?
Along with your school records, your HSPT test score will be sent to the principals of the high schools that you’re applying to, so that they can make an admissions decision. The HSPT test is also used in scholarship awards selections, and curriculum placement determinations.
How is the HSPT exam scored?
High schools nationwide use score results on the HSPT to make admissions decisions, scholarship award selections, and curriculum placement determinations. That said, there are no set guidelines for how schools use score results, empowering each school to set its own rules for evaluating your scores.
When determining your HSPT scores, the number of questions that you answered correctly on each of the subtests will be added up, which will give you a raw score for each subtest.
Your raw scores will then be converted into standardized scores and national percentile rankings for each subtest, which will clearly show how you stack up against other test takers nationwide on a scale from 1 (low) to 99 (high) where 50 is average.
What is a good HSPT score?
HSPT scores are reported in percentiles. Scores ranked in the 76th to 99th percentiles are considered a high score and 1st to 23rd percentiles are low. A good HSPT score is anything in the 75th percentile and above, while the 50th percentile is considered an average HSPT score.
Should I prep for the HSPT test? And how much?
HSPT exams should be taken only once per student. It is up to the school to decide if retesting will be allowed. As such, taking an HSPT prep course before the exam is very important.
HSPT exam prep times will vary by student, but to study the most efficiently it is recommended that students additionally use HSPT prep books which have diagnostic test and test taking strategies. Diagnostic tests allow students to see their strengths and weaknesses so they can focus their study efforts and minimize required study time to pass the exam.
How do I register for the HSPT test?
The HSPT test is ordered and administered by individual schools or dioceses throughout the country. Your first step towards taking the HSPT test should be to contact the school where you’d like to take the test, and ask for information about their registration process.
Unlike other standardized admissions exams, the STS (the Scholastic Testing Service—the official HSPT test creators and administrators) does not have set national days for administering the test. Individual schools and dioceses determine their own test days. For more information, contact the school in which you’d like to take the HSPT test.
How to practice for the HSPT test?
Peterson’s HSPT test prep offers five full-length HSPT practice tests. Our test prep also gives you all of the resources you need, including an HSPT study guide with tips for how to prepare for the exam, 80 interactive topic lessons and videos covering verbal skills, quantitative and nonverbal skills, and flashcards to help elevate your HSPT test prep.
What can I expect from a practice HSPT test?
Peterson’s full-length HSPT online practice tests are broken down by each section of the HSPT test. The diagnostic test helps you identify your strength and weaknesses, enabling you to focus more on areas where more study is needed. All practice tests are timed which simulates the actual HSPT test. Taking practice tests helps ease anxiety and bridge the gaps in course content.
How much practice time should I dedicate to the HSPT test?
HSPT practice times will vary by student. Peterson’s recommends that those studying for the HSPT test take advantage of the HSPT online practice tests we offer, along with the subject-based lessons, videos, and flashcards to review the exam content. Spending 6 weeks preparing for the HSPT test will help you feel more prepared on test day.
