DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

PSAT FAQs

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT test is a standardized test that 11th graders take to test their reading, writing, and math knowledge. The PSAT/NMSQT test is considered a practice test for the SAT exam. If students score high enough on their PSAT exam, they may be qualified for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

What are the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10?

The PSAT 8/9 test is designed for 8th and 9th graders to take during normal school hours to determine their academic strengths and weaknesses. This allows students time to improve their skills before taking college entrance exams.

The PSAT 10 test is similar to the PSAT/NMSQT test because it tests students’ reading, writing, and math knowledge. The two most significant differences between the PSAT 10 test and the PSAT NMSQT is that students take the PSAT 10 in the spring of 10th grade, not the fall of 10th or 11th grade. The PSAT 10 exam also does not qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

What’s on the PSAT?

The PSAT/NMSQT test has 139 questions divided into 3 sections. Students are given 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete all 3 sections.

In the reading section of the PSAT test, you’ll be asked 47 questions and have 1 hour to complete. There will be 5 passages given: 1 fiction literary passage; 1-2 passages from a U.S. founding document; a passage covering either economics, psychology, sociology, or social science; and 2 passages from scientific works on the foundations of either Earth science, biology, chemistry, or physics.

The writing and language section has 44 questions and allows 35 minutes to complete. Four passages will be provided: at least 1 narrative/story-type passage; the other passages will be either argumentative or informative and explanatory.

You will be asked 48 questions in the math section and have 70 minutes to complete. You can only use a calculator for a portion of the math exam. Math topics covered are algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, the passport to advanced math, and 2 questions on geometry and trigonometry.

How long is the PSAT?

The PSAT/NMSQT test has 139 questions divided into 3 sections. Students are given 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete all 3 sections. The writing section is 35 minutes long, the reading section is 1 hour long, and the math section is 70 minutes long.

What math topics are on the PSAT?

The PSAT math topics covered on the PSAT exam include algebra, problem-solving, data analysis, a passport to advanced math, and 2 questions on geometry and trigonometry.

Is PSAT difficult?

If you are well prepared, the PSAT test is not considered to be difficult for many students.

How is the PSAT scored?

PSAT scores range from 320 to 1520. Two sections, Evidence-based reading and writing, and math comprise the total PSAT score. Each section is scored from a range of 160 to 760.

Your raw score is the number of questions you get correct; these will make up your raw score for each section. Some versions of the PSAT test can be easier or harder depending on the version of the PSAT test you take and the day it’s given. The scoring process will balance different test versions to equal scaled scores.

Should I prep for the PSAT? And how much?

PSAT prep is essential because it will get you more familiar and comfortable with the PSAT test and future tests, like the SAT or ACT, you will take later on.

The test is 2 hours and 45 minutes long. With anything of that magnitude, a little practice is in order. Plus, a higher score makes your candidacy for a scholarship more likely. While everyone is different, Peterson’s recommends at least 6 weeks of preparation for test day.

What’s the best way to practice for the PSAT exam?

Taking a PSAT practice test is one of the best ways to practice and prepare for the PSAT exam. Peterson’s gives you full-length PSAT practice exams to prepare you for test day.

Can I take a PSAT practice test online?

Yes, you can take online PSAT practice tests. Peterson’s gives you access to full-length PSAT practice exams that will help you get the highest score possible.

Why take the PSAT?

One of the biggest benefits of taking the PSAT test is that it will familiarize you with how the SAT will be structured. It’s an excellent way to practice for the SAT exam, as colleges and universities will never see your PSAT scores. Another possible benefit is that you may qualify for scholarships if you score high enough on the PSAT test.

How do I register for the PSAT?

Students must sign up for the PSAT/NMSQT test through their high school. Each school’s signup process differs, so students should talk to their counselor to learn more.
